this post, I feel compelled to make an entry about my thoughts on rights in South Korea, about how it's like a third world country. I get so angry about it because with most of the foreigners I associate with, they don't see it like I do. I don't need them to see it my way, but to recognize that these things happen. They always say something like "No, Leah, I don't think it's that bad," when actually, yes, it is. The economic prowess of this country is a façade for their social failures.
Let me also preface this by saying as a Westerner I am also aware that my country is not the paragon of moral, social, and political correctness. Awful things happen in my country, too, but I don't condone it there either. I feel, though, as a foreigner, that I have the unique opportunity of viewing this country as an outsider and insider. Close enough to the fire to feel the heat but not to get burned, if that makes sense. What I'm trying to do here is understand. Understanding is the first step to improving. Perhaps if everyone can think critically of their own society, and of others if they so have the opportunity, then we can be compelled into action.
